TENS electrodes: compatibility, care and replacement

Learn what to check when buying Cefar TENS electrodes or leads, how to follow their care instructions and when to ask about replacements.

Cefar TENS machine with lead connector detail

Replacement electrodes are part of owning a TENS machine, but choosing them involves more than finding a similar-looking sticky pad. The device, lead connection and approved electrode specification need to match.

If you use a Chattanooga Cefar TENS, keep its model details and the packaging from your electrodes together. Those references make the next order easier and reduce the risk of confusing different accessories.

Start with the exact device and approved accessories

The Cefar TENS instructions specify manufacturer-supplied electrodes and approved accessories. A connector that appears to fit is not, by itself, confirmation that an electrode is suitable.

Before asking for replacements, make a note of:

  • The full device name and any model reference on its label.
  • The electrode name, size and product reference on the packet.
  • The lead or connector reference, if available.
  • Whether you need electrodes, a lead or both.

Use those details when you contact Muscle Doctor. If you are unsure which part you need, a clear photograph of the product label and connector can help identify the equipment. Please avoid including personal medical information in the photograph.

Check the pack, not just the pad shape

Ask which exact electrode is approved for your device and how many are supplied in the replacement pack. If your clinician has specified a particular electrode, provide that reference rather than substituting a different shape or size yourself.

A listing for electrodes is not necessarily a listing for replacement leads. Keep those items separate on your enquiry and confirm the total price for the combination you need. For a first purchase, our Cefar TENS buyer’s guide covers what to ask about the unit’s pack contents.

Follow the care instructions for your electrodes

The Cefar manual directs users to apply electrodes to clean, dry skin and follow the instructions supplied on the electrode packaging. It says not to immerse electrodes in water or apply solvents. Each person should have their own set.

For reusable self-adhesive pads, follow their packaging directions for returning them to the backing sheet and storing them in the resealable bag. Keep the packaging until the set is finished so the care directions and product reference remain available.

When should electrodes be replaced?

Replace electrodes that are worn, dried out or no longer adhere properly. Do not keep using a set simply because it has only been used a few times. Condition and the manufacturer’s stated limits matter; there is no single replacement timetable for every electrode.

Before using the device, inspect the leads and connectors for damage. Do not use damaged equipment. If the unit reports an electrode or connection error, follow its troubleshooting instructions and seek help if the cause is unclear.

Know when the question belongs with a clinician

If your skin becomes itchy, irritated or red, switch the machine off and remove the pads. Ask a healthcare professional about skin reactions, electrode positioning or changes to treatment.
